May 20: Walking Tour, John Hudson Thomas, 10 AM

Picture of Thomas houses

Led by John Newton and Daphne Touchais

Local designer and Berkeley Historical Society member John Newton and architecture tour guide Daphne Touchais will co-lead a tour focusing on the houses of John Hudson Thomas. We will start above Indian Rock Park and proceed down through the Thousand Oaks neighborhood and end at the Spring Mansion above Arlington Blvd. John Hudson Thomas was one of the most prolific Berkeley architects in the early 20th century who helped establish the Bay Area Tradition. He designed over 200 houses, predominantly in Oakland and Berkeley. His work uniquely combined influences such as Craftsman, Tudor Revival, Austrian Secessionist, Prairie School, and Romantic/Medieval in both architectural forms and details.
