Learn about the challenges and opportunities for creating a more resilient Berkeley shoreline through two presentations highlighting sea level rise science, nature-based adaptation options, and upcoming planning efforts. The presentations will provide an overview of the historical and ecological context and physical processes that shape the shoreline (Ellen Plane, SFEI), followed by a discussion of the City of Berkeley’s climate resilience and sea level rise adaptation planning efforts and the East Bay Crescent Subregional Shoreline Adaptation Plan (Katie Van Dyke, City of Berkeley).
Two speakers will give 20-minute presentations, followed by Q&A:
Ellen Plane, SFEI
Ellen Plane is a Senior Scientist in the Resilient Landscapes Program at the San Francisco Estuary Institute, specializing in sea level rise adaptation and tidal habitat restoration. Her expertise is in coastal processes, wetland ecology, and landscape planning. Ellen’s work spans site-scale projects, watershed-scale planning, and the development of regional tools that support nature-based adaptation across the San Francisco Bay Area.
Katie Van Dyke, City of Berkeley
Katie Van Dyke is the Climate Action Program Manager and Chief Resilience Officer at the City of Berkeley’s Office of Energy & Sustainable Development. She works to advance projects and programs that incorporate multi-benefit solutions and advance equity. She serves on the leadership team of the Bay Area Climate Adaptation Network and is leading the City’s participation in the East Bay Crescent’s Regional Shoreline Adaptation Planning.
The current exhibit, On the Waterfront, will be open for half an hour before and after the program.
