The North Berkeley Hills wildfire on September 17, 1923 destroyed 585 houses. The wind-blown fire started in Wildcat Canyon and came over the hill above the Rose Garden and followed a southwesterly, diagonal path, finally stopping at Hearst and Shattuck. (Cedar Street was roughly the center of the destruction.)
Using Arch Street as one of our example streets, we’ll compare the changes in architecture along the fire line. (The fire cut through Arch Street between Vine
and Cedar.) We will view the untouched housing compared to post-fire housing in the burned area.
