2024 BHSM picnic, Live Oak Park Picnic Area #2
Join us for our annual picnic in beautiful, historic Live Oak Park (1301 Shattuck at Berryman). We will have volunteer interest forms in case you’d like to get more involved, but all are welcome regardless. We will be in Picnic Area #1, across Codornices Creek from the recreation center. Please bring food or drink to share. Plates, cups, utensils, napkins and water will be provided.

Following the picnic and cleanup, Jordan Herrmann will lead a free two-hour walking tour through nearby neighborhoods. (You don’t have to attend the picnic if you just want to go on the walk. It will take a different route than the one he leads on May 31st. ) Meet him at 2:10 at Shattuck and Berryman.

The tour: After initial introductions and a very brief history of how the city put together the land for Live Oak Park, we’ll head up Berryman Path to the former site of the Napoleon Bonaparte Byrne House, telling their early pioneer story and Ruth Hayashi’s story. Then on to the Dempster house; two side-by-side Julia Morgans across the street from a landmarked Maybeck house; on to the “Rapunzel” house, the Senger house, and a 4-story, 10-unit, brown-shingle apartment building built in 1907; then Hawthorne Steps and Terrace (a “Terrace” of great Berkeley architects); onto Vine Lane; ending the outbound leg at Tupper & Reid house. Return by way of the Rose Garden and the home of filmmaker Les Blank, with its camera-covered mailbox. End tour where we began.
