In the 1920s and early ‘30s, lots surrounding John Spring’s Greco-Roman mansion were developed into an upscale, architecturally distinctive neighborhood just east of Arlington Avenue in North Berkeley. On this tour, we will examine the resultant mixture of Mediterranean and Northern European revival architecture in a neighborhood that has retained a secluded feel (some with access to an HOA pool and tennis courts). We will focus particularly on the multiple factors that led to the choice of the Spanish style—an important part of Berkeley’s “Mediterranean” feel. Length: Just under one mile roundtrip, with some moderate incline.
