Sunday, October 13, 10 am: Julia Morgan Architectural Tour of Elmwood Park and Claremont Court, led by Jordan Herrmann
We will walk by more than twenty houses designed by Julia Morgan in Elmwood and Claremont Court. Come see her unique “ensemble houses.” Morgan graduated UC in 1894 with a degree in civil engineering; one of her specializations was structural engineering. (Note: Her buildings remained standing after the 1906 earthquake.) Encouraged by Bernard Maybeck to study architecture at the École des Beaux Arts in Paris, she became the first woman to earn their certificate of completion in 1902 and then was California’s first female licensed architect. She received some 700 commissions over a 45-year career.
