Sunday, June 9: Walking Tour, Southside Sidewalk Secrets led by Ken Duffy – SOLD OUT

Ken Duffy reprises his sidewalk tour of . . . sidewalks! This tour considers the built environment underfoot, ranging through parts of the Southside neighborhood, mostly between College and Telegraph. We review “concrete examples” of sidewalk stamps identifying cement contractors of the day, some more than 120 years old. Some early contractors, like J.A. Marshall, did concrete work and also built houses. This tour also looks at an early reinforced-concrete house that survived the 1906 quake intact. Also featured are manhole covers, grates, and hydrants from a variety of local foundries and early utilities, as well as curbing, unusual driveways, retaining walls, old graffiti, embedded street names, and decorative scoring patterns, sometimes indicating former entrance alignments. We also visit the Berkeley Potter’s Wall at Willard Park.
